My name is Kate Arbuckle. I am 18 years old and have recently moved from Palmerston North to Wellington to pursue my studies. I am a first-year student at Massey University, studying towards a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Fashion.
I come from a family of five, consisting of my two loving parents, my younger sister Libby (16), my younger brother Thomas (14), and myself. My siblings and I have grown up in Palmerston North, a small, family-focused city where we have lived our entire lives. Although Palmerston North was a great city to have spent my past 18 years, I feel as though Wellington is where I belong, where I feel most energised and excited. Wellington has always been part of my life as half my family reside here. My family and I would visit Wellington several times a year, and it was always a time I looked forward to. I loved the big city atmosphere, the beautiful harbour, and most importantly the shopping.
Fashion has always been a passion and interest of mine. I love the feeling and excitement that comes with wearing a new piece of clothing, and the added confidence I gain when I’m wearing an outfit that I love. My grandmother has largely influenced my interest in fashion, particularly the creativity side. My grandmother first taught me how to sew at the age of 10, and since then I’ve been hooked. I then went on to study materials technology right through high school. Materials technology was a subject that I was passionate about and worked very hard at to achieve the best possible results. Due to my love for fashion, my ability to produce high-quality design work, and my years of hard work, I knew fashion design was the right route for me to pursue.
